David Bowie’s song “Changes” came to mind as I was going through the revisions for the first two episodes of SPRQ Media‘s audio production of my romantic novel, Goddess. So far, I’ve been pleased with the editorial team’s ideas. I’ve never been the kind of writer who became defensive about every little suggestion people had for my story. When I led a screenwriting group, we would read a writer’s pages aloud and offer suggestions. Sometimes, everyone else in the group would agree on what a screenplay needed to be improved, but the author would become defensive, coming back with reasons why his story was perfect the way it was. Occasionally, that writer would return later to admit we were right.
I learned in that group to accept feedback without letting my ego get in the way. If the suggestions were good, I used them. If they didn’t work for me, I set them aside and moved on.
